What Should I Post?
Here are the categories which you can report about. If you have ideas for additional categories, please do not hesitate to let me know. When you make a report, please add as much information as needed to fully describe the situation and ensure that the report gets accepted.
- Beach Cleanup: Post all of the information a potential volunteer might need in order to get involved with a beach cleanup (e.g. contact information, place, time, link, and any other useful info). After the beach cleanup, you could post the amount or weight of trash collected at that location, creating a record over time.
- Trash Problem: If you are at the beach and come across some trash that seems particularly problematic (e.g. possibly dangerous to beach-goers or wildlife, or just plain unattractive), post it here. Send a picture with the report if you can, and be as specific about the location as possible, so it can come to the attention of those who monitor, manage, and clean up the beaches.
- Lobster Trap Sightings: Derelict (abandoned) lobster traps are problematic for both human safety and wildlife. If traps get separated from the rest of the gear, they can continue to "ghost fish," or to trap fish or other organisms, even though the traps are not being pulled up anymore. The traps can wash ashore and pose a hazard to children on the beach. Since lobster traps are private property, it is illegal for the general public to take them and dispose of them themselves. So it is important to report the traps so that either the owner may be contacted (if it's possible to identify the trap number) to come pick it up, or so someone else may be able to deal with the issue. There is also not much data about the quantity of derelict lobster gear in the area and the potential impacts of this problem, so collecting reports on this map could be useful for that purpose as well.
- Wildlife Sightings: Post locations, descriptions, and photos/videos of wildlife you may encounter in the coastal areas. This could be interesting to US Fish and Wildlife or NH Fish and Game, or members of the general public who are especially interested in wildlife.
- Endangered Species: There are some endangered and threatened animal species in this area, and it is important to be aware of the management plans for some of these species, as sometimes this involves restrictions on human activities in certain areas during parts of the year (e.g. piping plover). Information about these management issues can be posted, and users can report sightings of any endangered or threatened species they see. See the page called "More Info: Endangered Species" for a first look at some of these species of concern. Send photos with your report if possible!
- Invasive Species: Check out the page called "More Info: Invasive Species" for some photos of potentially concerning plant species in this area. Again, send in photos and locations that are as accurate as possible. This information could lead to volunteer efforts or agencies actually working to clean these places up.
- Access Issues: This includes both conflicts over access (like the current situation in Rye, with a proposal to eliminate commercial activities at Rye Beach), and also beach closures due to noncompliance with EPA permits about safe water.
- Pollution: If you notice some pollution on or near the beaches, report it here. This could refer to debris, chemicals, or an unknown source but you notice you get ill shortly after visiting the beach, for example. If multiple people are reporting sickness from the same area, that would be cause for concern and further investigation.
- Research: Universities and Sea Grant, for example, can post about their research efforts. This may include links to news articles or embedded videos.
- Other Events/Opportunities: Post about local workshops or meetings about coastal happenings. Please include the time, place, date, and any other information that might be useful.
